A Journal for Walking Over Fallen Fences

September 23, 2006: Ananda Marga

In Porto Allegre, Brasil, Susan and I spent a few days living with the Ananda Marga Community. We’ve been visiting groups throughout Latin America who create economically self-sustaining communities that are outside of the mainstream system. We are shooting a half-fiction/half-documentary film with the working title “Outlaw Culture.”

It is winter but still a busy time at the Ananda Marga organic peach farm in Los Angeles. This is the prooning season. There are thousands of trees to be prooned and prepared for a new crop.

This is a good opportunity to learn a valuable farming skill. Right prooning means a good crop on the following season.

The farm is the largest organic farm in LA County and located in the high desert. It is also a beautiful and peaceful place for meditation in the company of an Ananda Marga monk.
